Staying in Brighton

This page was last updated in June 2008

During the Brighton Pubs we find one continuous annoying feature - the almost impossibility of finding Hotels and B+Bs willing to accept bookings for Saturday nights only, and the quality of these Hotels and B+Bs (Brighton's 'problem' of course is that it is a hip and trendy place to be in the Summer (both for individuals and conferences) and the Hotels and B+Bs can pick and choose their custom).

With this in mind we have collated some Hotel/B+B experiences from recent years to help you find something decent.
If this is not for you, then a list of your alternative options can be found below, or see the relevant information on the Links page.

Hotel and B+B reviews:

The bulleted list below is what we expect to get from Brighton B+Bs (although Hotels may be a little better), anything above this is considered good value:

Twin room with balcony and en suite shower was £80. Quiet location with lovely seafront view.
The owner is a very helpful lady.

The cab ride back home from Brighton took 10mins and cost £17 (it was £13 during the day).

A Cheap (£25 B+B per person - a bargain for Brighton) and cheerful 3* B&B, it's like walking back into time, tea pots, decor from the 60/70's.

We stayed in the pink family room, lots of space, 4 sharing, one double, and 2 singles, sink in the room, kettle tea and coffee, no biscuits. The showers and toilets are on the landing.

Breakfast: Hmmmmm Full English Breakfast, they also offer Vegetarian Option, you can even have scrabbled eggs if you want.
Landlord: Nice guy, likes cricket (Nick Maskell)!
Check in/out: Check in midday, departure 10am.
Breakfast: from 8-9am (a bit too early for me) .
Location: Central to all attractions, centre, station etc.
Child Friendly: no.

The Italian restaurant over the road serves excellent food and wine!

The Black Horse Pub (B&B)

People were friendly & helpful but I wouldn't stay again purely due to fact that room stank of cigarette smoke! We were given a twin room for £70/night - but they were good and let us check out whenever we wanted as they had no guests on the Sunday.
Wouldn't say it was child friendly - although Lara did like the big Rottweiler dog that sat next to our table at brekkie!

The room could have done with some renovation as it was a bit crappy - they provided a kettle which didn't dare to use. Had 2 stag dos staying at the same time so not ideal for Lara - and the seagulls were pretty loud all night.

Breakfast itself was actually very good - scoffed no problem.

Over-priced rubbish.

Alternatives to a Hotel or B+B:

1. Crash at a Friends

An excellent plan if you know someone in Brighton, or maybe you can scrounge somewhere with a complete stranger (Dicky Wheatley is your man for this).

2. Stay in Lewes or other nearby towns

Lewes and Peacehaven (and at a push even Worthing) are not too far away. They are about a £10-15 cab ride from Brighton itself. This could be your best option if you want a guaranteed Saturday only booking.

Lewes: A very nice historic town north of Brighton.
Travel: Trains from Victoria or even Brighton itself. By car A275 or A26 from London or A27 from Brighton.
Tourist Board Tel: 01273 483 448 (if you visit them, their brochure says that they will find you accommodation somewhere at least)
Hot Tips: This is a large hotel worth trying - White Hart Hotel Tel: 01273 476694
Peacehaven: A quiet coastal town to the East of Brighton.
This area is covered by the Lewes Tourist Board also.
Worthing: A larger coastal town a little further West of Brighton.
Tourist Board Tel: 01903 210 022

3. Camp

Brighton is well known for 'camp'.
But seriously, there are a couple of proper camp sites which have been used in the past.

One is close, but you can not book in advance for tents, the other is 10 miles away but you can book.
Camping can be an excellent cheap or last minute option.

Sheepcote Valley:

Tel:
01273 626 546
No advanced bookings for tent - first come first served.
A caravan club site near the marina - 2 miles east of Brighton.

This is a very nice camp site. I think about £18 a night for a camper van and 2 people. You can book in for a camper van or caravan - even if you aren’t a
member of the caravan club but it gets booked up quickly. You can't book for tents - its first come first serve and there are not many pitches.

Small Dole:

Tel

Basic facilities, essentially it is a farmer's field next to the farmhouse.
10 miles from Brighton.

It cost us £7.50 a night for the camper van and 2 people. Showers are an extra 50p each via a token. It’s a very basic camp
site with only a few toilets and one male and one female shower (that does wet you a bit!). Lots of space for tents or whatever - basically it's just a big field.

It's about 12 miles North West of Brighton centre and about 30 mins drive.
Actually called Farmhouse Caravan and Camping, in Small Dole near Henfield.

We got the bus in from here to Brighton.
A local bus from Small Dole to Henfield - goes every hour on Sat £1.70 each.
The No. 17 from Henfield to Brighton - goes every hour £3.60 each.

On the way back we got a taxi (I think after midnight??) for about £30.

Other caravan and camping options (found by Rebecca and Barry):
bulletBlackberry Woods - tents only camp site - about 8 miles North of Brighton.
bulletBuckle Caravan Park in Seaford - from where we think you can get a train along the sea front into Brighton in the daytime only I would imagine?

4. Train it home

The late trains from Brighton to London are not late enough to be ideal, but people often miss out the last pub and head straight for the station instead (nb this may well have improved recently - check times yourself).
Another option sometimes used by those who head for the clubs is to get the early morning train afterwards.

Be aware that Sundays are usually full of engineering works and that getting into the clubs is often a pain in the arse too.

5. Be rich

If you can splash the cash then the top end Hotels (like the Grand) will usually be available to you and may even offer Saturday only options. This is however of course is valuable beer money.

6. Get lucky

The 1st lucky option is to find a Saturday only Hotel booking by phone or by knocking on doors on Saturday. Good luck though, you could well be wasting your time.

The 2nd lucky option would be to meet a nice local resident, or Swedish student or something.
Again, you could be wasting your time :)

7. Sleep in Your Car

Unconventional option (ask Katherine for more information).

8. Don't drink, and drive home

Now let's be serious people.
